SNAP Guidelines

Vendors who participate in SNAP with Urbana’s Market at the Square will need to follow these guidelines for the 2021 Market Season. Vendors should accept SNAP tokens from customers like normal, just as they have in past seasons. If you are new to the Urbana’s Market at the Square SNAP token program, please read the section “Who Participates in SNAP” carefully. If you take SNAP tokens as payment, but you are not a qualifying vendor, you cannot be reimbursed.

How to redeem tokens/coupons for the 2021 Season

Place all tokens/coupons in the provided purple envelope.
Record your total token and coupon count on the provided paperwork for the appropriate week. This paperwork is located in the envelope at the start of every market day.
Return your envelope to the Market Info tent located at the North-West corner of the market (near the entrance.)

Redemption checks for SNAP tokens and coupons will be placed back in your envelope. You will receive them the week following turn-in. Checks are processed via The Land Connection. Any questions regarding payment should be sent to Cay Diamond (market@thelandconnection.org).

Who Participates in SNAP?

Any food for the household, such as:
- Fruits and Vegetables
- Meat, Poultry, and Fish
- Dairy products
- Breads and cereals
- Other foods such as pre-packaged snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages
- Seeds and plants, which produce food for the household to eat.
DO NOT accept SNAP tokens for these items:
- Pet foods
- Cleaning supplies, paper products, and other household supplies
- Hygiene items, cosmetics
- Vitamins, medicines, and supplements
- Live animals (except shellfish, fish removed from water, and animals slaughtered prior to pick-up from market.)
- Hot foods or Prepared Foods fit for immediate consumption (example: individual doughnuts, cakes, or cookies, poured beverages, anything from food trucks, etc.)
- Any non-food item, such as:
  - Pet foods
  - Cleaning supplies, paper products, and other household supplies
  - Hygiene items, cosmetics
Beginning the 2021 Market Season we are now participating in a Universal SNAP token and coupon system with The Land Connection (Champaign Farmer’s Market.) Tokens from past markets (Green/Orange Roosters, and Purple Eggplants) are all acceptable tokens at any market. We will also be distributing a new wooden token that has a maroon currant and $1 symbol on it.
Sometimes tokens from other markets make their way into ours. DO NOT accept these tokens, they cannot be redeemed.
- Red, UBA – Urbana’s Market IN the Square
- Any token that is from another market other than Urbana’s Market at the Square, Champaign Farmer’s Market, or the Universal Champaign-Urbana Farmer’s Market Tokens.
